What Is Solid State Symphony?
Solid State Symphony started out as a challenge- to see
how close we could get to the sound of a real orchestra
using only analogue synthesizers. Although the results,
for the most part, aren't as realistic as the big orchestral
libraries, Solid State does have a sound of it's own, and I
end up using it on almost every scoring project that I'm
involved in.
Instruments like "Velocity Orchestra" and "Synfonia" are
great writing tools, and I use them to sketch out themes
when I'm just getting my bearings and letting the movie
roll in DP. It helps to keep me from getting bogged down
in trying to choose the sound pallet right away. Which
string section from which orchestra? I can spend days
agonizing over sounds and never get a note written! This
way, I can lay down a sketch with Synfonia, then add
details over that using real orchestral samples. Many
times, the Solid State elements remain in the final mix for
warmth and thickness.
The LE version contains several orchestral pads and
some additional pads inspired by the "Space Music" of the
1960s and 70s. The full version of Solid State Symphony
has the individual sections- brass, woodwinds, and
strings- themselves each comprised of several sample
layers- all mapped out into giant programs. They sound
great, but tend to choke older samplers. So we
re-sampled those programs to create the complex pads
we have now. For instance, a single note in Synfonia can
represent the sound of 16 to 20 oscillators from the
original analogue synthesizers.
